Born and raised in Denver, Colorado U.S.A., Dean started the bass as a hobby while living in Japan for 5 years. Becoming more and more drawn to the instrument, his focus moved from International Affairs to Music. After seeing Japanese bassist Takashi Oyamada perform one life-changing evening, Dean realized it was music that was his true calling in life and thus, returned to the United States to enroll in the Music Performance Program at the University of Northern Colorado. He spent 2 years immersing himself in jazz performance, sight-reading, arranging, theory, and other aspects of music in Greeley. This was followed by his move to Denver to begin freelancing and performing in Colorado and beyond. Dean also focused on studying privately with more nationally recognized players such as bassists Benny Rietveld (Santana, Miles Davis) and David Roe Rorick (Johnny Cash, Dwight Yoakam), pianist Ted Alexander (Joe Venuti), and drummer Ed Greene (Barry White, Steely Dan).
Dean has always been attracted to various styles of music and has recorded and/or played with musicians in nearly all genres. Throughout the U.S., he has played Pop, Rock, Funk , Neo-Soul, Afro-Pop, Blues, Country , Bluegrass, Folk Rock, Americana, Hip-Hop, Jazz , Reggae, Latin Jazz, and Gypsy Jazz.
In 2007, Dean recorded his first studio CD, Dean Marold “The Demo”, which includes originals and personal arrangements of popular tunes. Since October of ’07, he has resided in Nashville, Tennessee where he performs, tours and records with various artists.
