Dean Marold - Upright / Electric Bass

Born and raised in Denver, Colorado U.S.A., Dean started the bass as a hobby while living in Japan for 5 years. Becoming more and more drawn to the instrument, his focus moved from International Affairs to Music. After seeing Japanese bassist Takashi Oyamada perform one life-changing evening, Dean realized it was music that was his true calling in life and thus, returned to the States to enroll in the Music Performance Program at the University of Northern Colorado. He spent 2 years immersing himself in jazz performance, sight-reading, arranging, theory, and other aspects of music in Greeley. This was followed by his move to Denver to begin freelancing and performing in Colorado and beyond. Dean also focused on studying privately with more nationally recognized players such as bassist Benny Rietveld (Santana, Miles Davis), pianist Ted Alexander (Joe Venuti), and drummer Ed Greene (Barry White, Steely Dan).

Since he has always been attracted to various styles of music, it was only natural for Dean to freelance with musicians in all genres. Throughout the U.S., he has played Pop/Rock with Nina Storey and Melissa Ivey, Funk and Neo-Soul with Vince Johnson (Lyric, Prince), Afro-Pop with Musa Konate (Salif Keita), Blues with the Deltasonics, Country with Glenn Taylor (Ron Miles), Jazz with Joe Bonner (Pharoah Sanders, Max Roach), Reggae with The Healing Force, Latin Jazz with Amizade, and Gypsy Jazz with the Gypsy Swing Revue, just to name a few. Dean has also played and recorded with national and international artists such as Bob Margolin and Willie "Big Eyes" Smith (Muddy Waters), Gwendy Joysen, and Al Wilson (Taylor Swift).

In 2007, Dean recorded his first studio CD, Dean Marold "The Demo" , which includes originals and personal arrangements of popular tunes. He now resides and performs in Nashville, Tennessee.
